View Full Version : Perfect Map Idea!!!

I would really like to tweak this map around to fit the Hidden setting. Its quite a creepy one once you've seen it all and what it has to offer the Hidden. http://www.gmodfiles.com/view/121

The screenshot makes me think you are joking.

Theres more to the map than a gas station in the desert isnt there?

28th April 2008, 05:01
i hope its more than that..?

28th April 2008, 10:22
mine suggest is betta1!!1 muhuuhahahahahaha

a desert whit a gas station in the middle..

give it a try, maybe you can expand the station, and add some destroyed cars on the road, and maybe in far range a heat shader, giving the hidden a chance..

LOL. So, how big is the desert around? Can you actually go into the Gas-Station or is it just a prop on the horizon? :D

28th April 2008, 16:09
Looks more like a waypoint on a driving map. What stops anyone from just running away towards the horizon?

i played that map in my Gmod days, it is exactly what it looks like. a giant desert with a gas station.

it does make a good contruction site for bases though becuase of the long flat plane, but as a hidden map hell no with a capitol HELL and just for fun trow in the NO.

too open and easy for the hidden :(

28th April 2008, 23:23
AH yes It may be a bit tooo Open, BUT there is way much more to it

there is the Gas Station.
there is the Military Outpost.
there is a deserted Village.
there is the Unpowered garage.
there is a Underground Base of some sort. (not connected to the Military outpost) which is perfect for the Hidden to start at
there is a "Powerstation" built into a mountain.

For those of you with Garry's mod 9/10 check it out. It's quite a sight.

This is for those Fluffy Matches that will freak people out since it's so open. It will also inspire team work since if you wander the desert...surely you will die alone..

Ill get some nice pics for you guys

How will you stop players from just... Walking away? Most maps are made to keep the Illusion of a Real World to some degree. Randomly stopping against thin air would break that illusion pretty hard.

28th April 2008, 23:48
there are Mountains as the map barriers

Here are some screens.

28th April 2008, 23:50
It won't work.

Go play hidden more and think of why all the stock maps are made the way they are.

29th April 2008, 00:13
Thats just shutting the doors on something great now isn't it?

If you would examine whats ACTUALLY on the map you would see that there IS enough for both sides.

All the buildings have lots of cramped spaces, loose objects, and are of low light which are suitable for the Hidden.

Okay the desert is essentially a death trap for the IRIS. This Map Deffiantly Favors the Hidden. So its basically easy to roam as a Hidden. Where is he? well he could be potentially anywhere especailly on this map. Thats why you need to function as a team to find him or let him find you.

It would work..your not letting it though.

Okay the desert is essentially a death trap for the IRIS.

Open spaces with no cover are death traps for the HIDDEN.

You'll have iris going to the corners of the desert, so they can see the hidden coming from far. And when the hidden tries to rush toward someone at the edge of the desert, he'll be out of stamina by the time he gets there.

Its way easier to see the hidden moving around if he's far away, people with f2000s will just snipe him.

The vast expanse of the desert is there for people to build stuff in Gmod, it has no application in the hidden, in fact its terrible for the gameplay.

I've seen open maps before, and if they're not very dark (eg cemetery), or have sparse cover for the hidden they crash and burn.

A good hidden map varies between medium sized open spaces with cover providing geometry with multiple exits, and moderately tight CQB areas (corridors, small connected rooms...).
Also importantly, good hidden maps have much vertical variation. That means theres usually always platforms below or above you. This gmod map is one big flat displacement, with a few structures tacked on.

edit: just saw the screens.

The interior areas are cool, and look like they could work with the hidden. But the map WONT WORK with the desert.
Make a map inspired by those structures, but replace the desert say with... a military compound, that would work great. Limited space, yet can be large, a lot of opportunity for cover with buildings, barracks, tanks and whatnot.

And this is why I would like to Tweak it for the Hidden Setting. It would take alot, but I'm sure I can get rid of the stuff it doesn't need or fix up what it needs.

This is pretty much a base of what I have in mind

I guess I am not factoring in how unrealistically people do tend to play.

Of course this whole project would probably be going over the line, because I can just let mappers make the ones that count.

It is a Great Idea however.

I see. Sorry to come off so negative.
Its just hidden maps do need to follow some specific conventions that revolve around the very unusual gameplay.

hiddenmaps are very lovly in detail, because the athmosphere is important

gmod maps are low detailed for good fps and very big, so you can fly and build huge crap.

if gmod meets hidden source the mapper would map months to create an interesting hidden level where the fps arent under 10

1. make the map smaller.
2. destroyed cars etc on the road.
3. water/heat shader in the desert,
4. gas station should be expand.
