Sorry to post this in the mapping section, but I figured mappers would know more than anyone else when it comes to something like this...

So... my question is does anyone know if there's a way to make normal maps animated, and if so can you show/tell me how?

apply it like a water texture but make it a func_brush or something so it's 'solid'?

no, i mean how do i make the texture itself

I'm looking to make a water type texture (really i'm making a texture to go just outside of a glass texture that looks like a heavy rain hitting the window) but it has to be a custom texture. How is it that I make one with an animated normal?

There are two ways of animating textures:

-Using multiple frames (http://developer.valvesoftware.com/wiki/Material#Vtex_.TXT_file_compile_parameters), but i don't think you can use normal maps this way
-Using Material Proxies (http://developer.valvesoftware.com/wiki/Proxies) in order to mathematically animate a texture, like flowing water (http://developer.valvesoftware.com/wiki/Flowing_Water), or try this (http://www.interlopers.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=8062) tutorial - there you'll also see how to animate the normal map.
