I've finally made something that looks alright in max, but im still lost in all the stuff you can use... I tried making a model of my mixer, with a nice high resolution texture of it on a plane, its not much just a couple of copy and pastes:

Im now trying to add detail to the plane, like grooves where the sliders are and bumps where the led's are. I've figured out how to add vertices to the plane, which creates a lot of useless edges, but I dont know how to push a group of vertices out.
Any help is appreciated :)

You can shape it with either gizmos or using the boolean thing which adds or substracts shapes to/from your existing shape. The latter can be accessed via create objects - geometrie - combined objects. Probably my translation skills won't suffice so I'll just add a ss:

Wouldn't extruding be sufficient here? Just split the plane's surface into multiple rectangles where you need, then use the the "Inset" tool. Mark the poly you just created and use resize tools to get it into a proper shape. Then use "Extrude" to make some kind of groove..
I'm an amateur myself, but I think this is the geometry you need:
