I cant get the features from the source plugin to work. I downloaded the file, extracted it, and installed it via XSI. It tells me to restart the program, when I boot it up again its the same as before.
The tutorials im using have a "Valvesource tools" drop down menu at the top, I dont :(

Did you physically download it from the softimage:xsi webpage or through steam, i cant remember, but i think steam auto redirects you to there download page. After installing, it should be ready to run.. here is the link to the file and addons page (http://www.softimage.com/downloads/XSI_Mod_Tool_4.2/default.aspx).

Ok yeah, the link in the sdk worked properly. The one from wikipedia must have been incomplete.

I already sent this to you in a PM, but for everyone else who needs to know this, to activate XSI as XSI:Mod Tool, you must go to this website to get a registration code for the Mod Tool. It's completely free (just a little too well hidden for anyone who wants to use the mod version)...

The good news is that this is a full version of XSI that actually allows you to save/import/export/texture/compile models entirely, as well as set animations for character rigs too. Unfortunately it has a few restrictions to it, but it WILL allow you to make any type of model needed to make source engine models... you just cant make another toy story if you really wanted to....

Thanks fluff. I had visited that site, but yeah, I didnt find the place and ended up thinking I was being tricked into paying.

I'm having a hard time getting models to work via Blender + Milkshape (Milkshape's UV Editor is ridiculous). Blender is so extremely intuitive, shame there is no proper .smd export plugin, and i can't export the UV map to Milkshape. Think i'll need to try XSI, too. I remember my first attempt with XSI: "WTH how do i place anything?" Nothing beats Blender regarding usability.

I'll download the Mod Tool tomorrow and see if i can get past the first steps. So, if you know of some good tutorial links for this tool, don't be shy with posting 'em here, thanks.

Does anyone know of a nice UV unwrapping method? Atm i have to adjust every polygon manually, the provided unwrapping methods are a bit crappy. Something like marking edges as "seams" so the program knows where and how i want the model to be unwrapped would be nice, as it is used in Blender.

Anyone?

Nothing beats Blender regarding usability.

Except nearly anything else... :p

There's no particularly easy way of doing UV unwrapping - some programs offer pelt mapping, but that'll still require individual tweaking to make neat UVs.

Well, Blender has LSCM UV-mapping, that's a far more convenient method of unwrapping a model as you only have to set seams on the model where the map has to be splitted, then it gets unwrapped according to those seams and it keeps the proportions - most of the time you don't even need to adjust the UV map afterwards.

LSCM is the same as pelt mapping - it's ok for simple shapes and organics, but doesn't do so well on more hard edged objects (like vehicles or characters with hard armour on)

Maybe this is too late or whatever, but here (http://www.snarkpit.net/editing.php?page=tutorials&game=HL2&id=200) is a tutorial for setting up the valve plugin for XSI. The bottom has tons of links to tutorials for using XSI. Hope this helps.

He thanks, i'm already bitching around in XSI though..

How about everyone shows some of the work he has done there? As we all seem to be beginners, this could be fun xD.

Here are my three models i've done so far:

Wall light (retextured it yesterday though, but the new skin isn't that different) including two skins to switch the selfillumination:

Console, not sure how to texture it yet, but i think i will model it again anyway:

Inflatable motorboat, not ready yet:
