create a shortcut and use as the command line...
-applaunch 215 -console -game "<location of your sourcemods>\hidden" +map hdn_stalkyard
for instance - my local test server is
"G:\Program Files\Steam\Steam.exe" -applaunch 215 -console -dev -game "G:\program files\steam\steamapps\sourcemods\hidden" +map hdn_stalkyard
Sorry, I should have made that clear to start with...
81.99.104.210:27015 - there's a temporary server here for now - it's running off my machine, it's probably good for 3 - 4 outsiders to join... Though not tested it!

Im doing this a easier way, Downloading srcds via hldsupdatetool.exe from steampowered. Then copy the whole Hidden folder to C:\srcds ( C:\srcds\Hidden <== should be like that ) then click on the srcds.exe file in C:\srcds and choose Hidden: Source as the game :)
======
Tutorial
======
1) Download hldsupdatetool.exe from steampowered
http://www.steampowered.com/download/hlds_updatetool.exe
2) Once installed, copy hldsupdatetool.exe to a newly created folder for the srcds ( C:\srcds )
3) Updating Server: Go to Start >> Run >> type in the run box "cmd" with out the ""
4) when the cmd window opens up type "chdir C:\srcds" without ""
5) If you have a account for dedicated server type: hldsupdatetool.exe -command update -game "Counter-Strike: Source" -dir . -username UsernameHere -password PasswordHere
6) Sit back and watch it download dedicated server.
7) Once its downloaded it will say HLDS upto Date
8) Copy Hidden folder from the rar file to "C:\srcds" and click srcds.exe to run the server, Remember to choose Hidden: Source as the game.

Ok, I got it to install by not doing anything with username and password. To set up, download the hlds update tool for hl2 from the steam website. Run the hldsupdatetool.exe by double clicking on it to update it. To install the ds, just type:
hldsupdatetool -command update -game "Counter-Strike Source" -dir c:\srcds
That is it, it will start updating. Then copy the \hidden folder from your \SteamApps\sourcemods\ folder to the c:\srcds folder and go from there.
Oh, I think to set the name of the server you can make a shortcut to srcds.exe and add the following:
+hostname "my crazy hostname"
and to do a password you can do:
+sv_password mypassword
and to limit the number of players you can do:
-maxplayers 6
I think..... :D

To set up, download the hldsupdatetool (http://www.steampowered.com/download/hlds_updatetool.exe) tool for hl2 from the steam website.
YES! That is EXACTLY how to do it without using stem (it will run smooher since steam.exe uses up resources...).
Remember to put the Counter-Strike SOurce in quotation or else it will download the 1.6 files.
And if it accidently does start doing that you must delete all of the files it downloaded before you start again or it will give you an error about mixing source dedicated server and non source...
And you can use the GUI or command line with this too BTW.
To name it make a server.cfg and put it in your cfgs foler. To name it go..
hostname "BLA BLA BLA"
For reference if this was a CS:S server you would also put lines like this in the server.cfg
mp_timelimit 20
mp_roundlimit 5
mp_friendlyfire 1
log on ("log" stands for a log as in to log info, not as in logging into a forum)
etc. etc.
In THEORY using hldsupdatetool wont lag as much as with steam, for example my server (for css) has fairly high pings yet people do not lag.
If your server DOES start lagging you can enter your task manager (ctrl+alt del) and find srcds.exe in the processes tab, or in the first tab right click your server and click "go to process". Once you get there right click it, set priority---HIGH. (click yes to the warning message.)

http://forum.hidden-source.com/showpost.php?p=1470&postcount=26
i swear man, that is how you do it with hldsupdatetool.
Only for me if i double click on it it would not run so i had to go to
start--run "cmd"
that opens up console.
For me i had installed the tool on "C:\srcds" so i went...
cd C:\srcds
then just do what i said in the link at the beginiing of the post.
Or you could just do it with steam and click on "play games" then at the bottom there is source dedicated server, then choose "Hidden: Source" as the game fill in max players that you want (for H: S dont make it more than 9) then fill in rcon password and it should start with the graphical client.
Since it will be running off of steam it will lag, to stop the lag the easiest way is to go to your task manager (ctrl alt del) find srcds.exe in the processes tab and right click it, set priority to "High" and click "yes" on the warning.

When you use the non steam version, make sure when you update it you type:
hldsupdatetool.exe -command update -game "Counter-strike source" -dir . -username <your user> -password <your pass>
Then when you go to your srcds folder there should be srcds.exe and not HLDS.exe! hlds is for the HL1 based games and mods like cs1.6, etc :p

Ok, the dezicated server has finished being uploaded to one of our clan servers, I do how ever still need help. When I connect to FTP I see 4 foulder, 2 match servers (Folders : Match #1 & Match #2), and to public (Folders : Public#1 & Public #2). Currently all 4 servers are running CS:S.
We decided that we would ba happy to run hidden source on Public #2, so this is where I uploaded the dedicated server files. Now, I was told last night on mIRC that it is ok to upload the hidden folder alongside the cssource folder which is already in the Public #2 folder. I wasn't really sure as to how, cecause wont both games be trying to run at the same time with the same IP?
Also to get the game running you use the bellow:
create a shortcut and use as the command line...
-applaunch 205 -console -game "<location of your sourcemods>\hidden" +map hdn_stalkyard
SO I would use:
-applaunch 205 -console -game <SOMETHING>\#Public 1\hidden" +map hdn_stalkyard
Or the one above:
-console -game hl2mp +ip 1.1.1.1 -port 27015 +maxplayers 20 +map dm_lockdown -autoupdate
So :
-console -game hl2mp +ip 83.142.49.23 -port 27015 +maxplayers 20 +map hdn_stalkyard -autoupdate
As you may have noticed, servers aren't my strong point, help wpuld be appreciated. Thanks in advance,
The.ViruS
14th June 2005, 10:05
You would need the first one
-applaunch 205 -console -game <SOMETHING>\#Public 1\hidden" +map hdn_stalkyard +hostname "blah"
That should work.

Ok so:
-applaunch 205 -console -game <SOMETHING>\#Public 1\hidden" +map hdn_stalkyard +hostname "www.Clan-SaB : Hidden-Source"
Next question, what is the <SOMETHING>, and where do I type this command? Bare in mind we are renting the box from a server provider.

Gentlemen,
Until now we are unsuccesfull starting a Hidden dedicated server by using a batch-file like we do with our other HL2-servers. After installing the server-files for hidden we start the batchfile with in it this parameter-line:
c:\games\hl2-server\srcds.exe -console -game hidden -maxplayers 9 -port 27020 -autoupdate
The serverconsole window pops up with the following error-message:
"attempt to create unknown entity type event_queue_saveload_proxy!"
Game.dll loaded for "Hidden : Source"
maxplayers set to 9
Network: IP 137.224.223.124, mode MP, Dedicated Yes, ports 27020 SV
The server sems to run, but it cann't be joined nor can it be seen in the serverlist.
What are we doing wrong ?
Any idea lads ?
We run other mods without any problems but hidden seems a bit different ;)
Help will be very appreciated.
Thanks, Monk.

I did the thing in Ging's post as when i tried to go to the website in Fr499ys i could't find it. It said it was not there. So i was wondering if someone could help me out. I get as far as getting the dedicated server running but from there, no one can find my server. Perhaps the name isn't changing. Perhaps one of the scripts is setup wrong. Please help. Thank you

Somewhat it seems like there are many in here that do NOT know what a Dedicated Server mean.
A dedicated server run on a separate computer from the one you play the game on.
The so called Dedicated Server you launch from the "Steam menu" is only a Listening Server. (Valve did a bummer calling that a Dedicated Server).
So I must say for all the newcommers that want to set up a SRCDS it's one hell of a forest of misleading threads in here.
But! It's a GREAT game! :D
Ging

The dedicated server you run from the steam menu is a dedicated server - it doesn't have to be run from a different computer... The difference is that a listen server displays the game graphics and allows the server to join as a player.

No, thats not the way us Server Ops see it. A true Dedicated Server is just that. It's DEDICATED to running a game server, nothing else.
listen server displays the game graphics and allows the server to join as a player.
That's why its a LISTEN server and NOT dedicated.

No, thats not the way us Server Ops see it. A true Dedicated Server is just that. It's DEDICATED to running a game server, nothing else.
The server found on the dedicated server is still a dedicated server - whether or not you Server Ops see it as so doesn't change the fact that it is a dedicated server...
That's why its a LISTEN server and NOT dedicated.
Welcome to "Real life land" - while you've been away living in "server op land" things haven't changed... A listen server is defined as a server that is also a client (or vice versa)... No matter who or what you are, a dedicated server is just a server...

No matter who or what you are, a dedicated server is just a server...
:eek:
In the world I live in and according to Valve/Steam-
From Steams FAQ
There are actually four types of Servers for Half-life Games:
Listen Server (HL1 and HL2):
This is where you start a server from the game itself and play at the same time
... there is only a minimal control panel.
This requires the Steam Client to always be running.
All the stock game content is contained in a single cache file.
You don't need to update this it will automatically update.
note: Listen Servers may require "sv_lan 0" to be accessable to internet players.
Client HLDS Server (HL1 and HL2):
This is the option in the Steam Games Menu.
This server is a full server and you have to connect to it from LAN or from internet.
This requires Steam Client to always be running.
This has the full control panel.
All the stock game content is contained in a single cache file.
You don't need to update this it will automatically update.
Stand-Alone HLDS Server (HL1)
This is a totally independent install from Steam.
It does not require Steam client to be running.
This server is a full server and you have to connect to it from LAN or from internet.
There are no cache files, all the maps and things are unpacked.
You need to manually update this type of Server.
Stand-Alone Source (SRCDS) Server (HL2)
This is a totally independent install from Steam, and Unique for the HL2 Engine.
It does not require Steam client to be running.
This server is a full server and you have to connect to it from LAN or from internet.
There are no cache files, all the maps and things are unpacked.
You need to manually update this type of Server.
As you can see Valve considers a Listen server just that, a Listen server, not a Stand Alone server.
I would never assume I know more about coding than a Coder. Why would you assume you know more about servers than a Server Op?
You may see the entire FAQ on Servers form Valve here:
http://support.steampowered.com/cgi-bin/steampowered.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=181&p_created=1093570699&p_sid=EVlgcN-h&p_lva=&p_sp=cF9zcmNoPTEmcF9zb3J0X2J5PSZwX2dyaWRzb3J0PSZwX 3Jvd19jbnQ9NzUmcF9wcm9kcz0zJnBfY2F0cz01NyZwX3B2PTE uMzsyLnUwJnBfY3Y9MS41NzsyLnUwJnBfc2VhcmNoX3R5cGU9Y W5zd2Vycy5zZWFyY2hfbmwmcF9wYWdlPTE*&p_li=&p_topview=1

Note the HLDS / SRCDC - implying that the bottom three are dedicated...
I'm not even sure what you're arguing about right now, I've already stated that a listen server is not a dedicated server, using basically the same definition as given in that faq... You're preaching to the converted about listen servers...
However, my original point still stands - the dedicated server available from the Steam play games | tools menu is a dedicated server. Using Create Server from the game menu creates a listen server... In this respect the faq you've quoted from backs up my point, so cheers for that...
I'm not assuming I know more than anything about anyone - I am however making an educated statement backed up by your own information... Either you've misread what I'm saying or perhaps you aren't the Server Op you think you are? :p I mean, would it make you feel better if I told you that I've run servers in the past? admittedly for Quake 2, but still acting as a server op...

Telling people that a Client HLDS Server is the same as a Stand-Alone Source is misleading.
The type of files used are different. The way you run, update or connect to these servers is also different. With a Client HLDS Server all the stock game content is contained in a single cache file. With a Stand-Alone Source there are no cache files, all the maps and things are unpacked.
I'm not trying to argue with you. I feel that people with questions about servers should be given clear and accurate information. This will save them hours of frustration and the rest of us hours of explaining why when they change values in the server.cfg/motd/mapcycle.....ect, it dosnt take effect in their server. Including problems with location, type of files used or edited, map/sound folders or the plethora of other problems that stem from a very basic misunderstanding of a server or how it runs.

Telling people that a Client HLDS Server is the same as a Stand-Alone Source is misleading.
From my point of view (as a coder) they're the same thing - they don't run displays other than basic consoles, they act in the same way in all but a few minor points...
To the layman - whom we're basically working with here, the differences are so minimal as to be unimportant... Someone telling them that the Client HLDS is a listen server will just lead to more confusion than it will solve - which is what kicked off this entire thing! :D
Hi, i know this is a bit old but im struggling to get anyone to connect to me hidden server.
i followed the instuctions earlier in the thread and ive managed to get the GUI to load that lets me select game - i select Hidden : Beta 3
players - 8
Server name ...blah blah and so on
it lets u pick a port, i have tried both 27015 and 27016 when i click start server it gives me an IP of 192.168.1.4:27016 which is a local IP
so i then went into my router and set my port forwarding on my ip 192.18.1.4 to 27016 .. but it still wont let anyone outside my LAN access it??
after setting the portforwarding, all i have to do is give them my ip for e.g 80.229.41.240 and the port i set it on 27016
that should then work shouldn't it?
is there someone that can help me?
cheers

have you got sv_lan set to 0 in your server config?
ooo i dont know me looks now
as uve already probably gathered im new to this, so sorry for the dumb questions, but where is the server config i change the sv_lan setting to 0 in
o and to let you know "Network" is set to "0" which select Internet, not LAN when the dedicated server box loads but it still wont work over the net...
is there any settings on my router that might help?
its a D-Link 604t
sorry to spam multiple posts, ive also forgot to mention, my srcds.exe wont open either, to get it to load i have to launch it through cmd. using the command srcds -game hidden
i dont know if this helps at all. and the PC im tryin to run the server from hasn't got steam installed, o n when i have the dedicated server running i go into console n ill paste here what i find when i put in some commands, again i dont know if this will help..Connection to Steam servers successful.

you could post back what you did to resolve your problems. That way the next person, won't have to find the answer the hard way, like you have had too.
That's kinda the whole point of forums, helping each other where possible.
Sorry I missed your earlier problems, or I'd have tried to help.
Ok Sure
The 1st part of setting up the the hidden source server is described at the start of this thread so i wont repeat it, the main trouble i had was i had a router, and i needed to set port forwarding on my IP
the ports you need to forward are
27000-27020 UDP
27030-27039 TCP
1200 UDP
27015-27016 TCP
once these were entered on my router it started working fine.
also you cant see this server on your own machine using HLSW typing in you external IP for eg 80.229.46.8 then the port 27015 and so on, because most router dont allow outbound and inbound connection on these ports, apparantly, to control the server through HLSW you need to type your LAN address into HLSW for e.g 192.168.1.2 it will show you the server and all the ppl connected.
to find you ip go to the connection status page on your router, and that will be the IP you need to give to ppl who want to join and the port you set on the Server console, or go to www.whatismyip.com
hope someone out there finds this useful

Ok 1...
How do I get it to work with the Tool/srcds/ function so it looks like this:
http://img230.imageshack.us/img230/6894/screeny0cj.jpg
Help!
what i did to get that console was open up CMD
you click start and then go to run, type CMD in the box and press enter
once there go to the directory where you have installed the HLUPTOOL.exe beacuse where you ave run this tool to do the update, it downloads the SRCDS.exe you need to run it, for e.g chdir c:\srcds
then once you are there run the command srcds.exe -game hidden
this will load the console you see in the picture!
hope this helps

All this needs is someone to type in hard core detail on how to exactly do that and almost every one would get it. PLz someone do that
Someone edit this please if its incorrect but this is HOW i did it.
Download HLDSupdatetool.exe google search for it and then download it, once downloaded double click it to install the software but when it asks for an install directory change this to C:/srcds (this is just to make things easier later on) once its fully installed go and download hidden server pack from http://www.hidden-source.com beta 4 now :D its around 150 meg or so.
Once you have downloaded this (im gathering you are on XP) click Start then Run, in the Run box type CMD and press enter
CMD will now load, you need to type the following
chdir c:/srcds
hldsupdatetool.exe -command update -game "counter-strike source" -dir c:/srcds
!IMPORTANT! make sure u use quotation marks around the "counter-strike source" other wise it will loads the cs 1.6 files
now it will come up with a message checking bootstrapper version blahblahblah etc.. this bit is dependant on your internet connection it took around a hour on mine, i have a 2meg line.
once its has completed downloadin all files that is needed it will display a message at the bottom saying version up to date.
now you need to go back to your Hidden Server files that you downloaded earlier, it will be in .RAR format so extract the whole contents to the c:/srcds directory, you'll notice that it will extract into a folder called hidden.
once you have done that your just about ready to run your server, to launch the server go to CMD again, click start run then type CMD and press enter, inside CMD you now need to type
chdir c:/srcds
srcds.exe -game hidden
(if you know how to make a .bat file then you could make one that you can launch form desktop that means you dont have to do this bit)
you'll see the Server console load now, make sure the game is set to Hidden, theres now point in changing the server name etc as you cant do this through here, you need to go into the c:/srcds/hidden dir and edit the server.cfg to set the server name and other parameters, like players, map etc.
set the port through here, most people use 27015
once your happy click start and your server will now be functional!
all you need to do is give people you IP go to http://whatismyip.com if you dont know how to find that out, and add the port that you set on the end of ur ip for e.g 80.256.75.345:27015.
to check your Server is working you can check it through HLSW, if you have a router this doesn't work properly if you type the IP you go from whatismyip.com, you need to type your local IP to see and control your server through HLSW, to find this out go to CMD again and type ipconfig and press enter, you will see you IP address appear you then type this into the server IP on HLSW.
Also if you are using a router, u need to set some ports, if you dont know where to go to set ports on your router, look in your manual but these are the ports you need.
27000-27020 UDP
27030-27039 TCP
1200 UDP
27015-27016 TCP
once you have done this then people can start to access your server over the internet, but if you are just using a ADSL modem, then this wont apply to you, yours should just work fine.
Hope this helps,
Sorry for going into so much detail, but i thought it would be best so not to confuse.

Read the manual that shipped with your edition of Windows. Then return.
Alternatively, close all your windows and search for a button that says 'Start'. The button that says 'Start' is indeed the Start button. Click it. Search for 'Run'. Click it. Proceed from there.

o dear, u want to run ur own server, but u dont know what CMD is..... :/
you'll struglle my friend, CMD is basically is a DOS type program, to load CMD press your start button in the bottom left hand side of your desktop, then you should see RUN, u click this with your left hand mouse button, now a little box will appear towards the bottom of the screen, inside this box type CMD and press your enter button - the button that says enter on it!
if you cant follow that, youll have no chance of running your own server.
i canny make this any simpler, unless i put loads screenshots with it..

If you're only 11, you could wait a couple of years until you start up your own server. And I'm not sure if Hidden or Half-Life 2 would be the right games for an 11-year old. It says 18+ in the intro.

You're aware of course that HL2 carries a mature / 15 certificate aren't you? Maybe you should go away and play something more suitable, like, oh, Mary King's Riding Star and Equstriad (http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00006L78Y/026-6702393-9885202?v=glance&n=300703)?

I don't care how good you are, honestly I don't... I will however point out that if you are in the UK - whoever purchased HL2 for you broke the law and are the exact cause of why video games are shown in such a bad light in regards to kids getting access to games that are unsuitable for them.

Hi!
I've tried to start a dedicated server with the first method, it means with source dedicated server, but i can't make my server work. I explain:
I start my server, then i indicate values for sv_lan 0 and sv_region 255, but my server is in the "Lan" server list, and not in the internet list... The ports are opened in my routeur (27015) but it doesn't appear in the right server list..
Can you help me?
Thx

And why when I give my friends my WAN IP + :27015 they still can't connect my server?
Thank you

Have you forwarded 27015 to your local ip address?
The errors are fine to ignore - especially considering it's CSS.

Configuration
adminlist.txt
This is where you place all your admins that you wish to have access to the administration features. The default file explains how to setup your admins.
Edit the file $BASE/cstrike/cfg/mani_admin_plugin/adminlist.txt
NOTE : The flags represent what you DON’T want administrators to have access to, if you want access to ALL functions then don’t add flags.
For reference here is an example extract: -
//
// Add your IP's Steam addresses, Names and Passwords
// in this file for admins
//
//
// e.g STEAM_0:0:21233123
// 213.44.33.47
//
// ADDING FLAGS MEANS YOUR ARE STOPPING ADMINS FROM USING
// THOSE OPTIONS UNLESS YOU HAVE mani_reverse_admin_flags set to 1
// in your autoexec.cfg
//
// Restriction options are :-
//
// k = restrict admin from kicking players
// r = restrict admin from executing rcon commands via ma_rcon
// q = restrict admin from executing rcon commands from the menu
// e = restrict admin from the adminexplode command
// m = restrict admin from slaying players
// b = restrict admin from banning players
// s = restrict admin from running ma_say
// o = restrict admin from running ma_chat

// c = restrict admin from changing maps
// p = restrict admin from playing sounds

// O = restrict admin from running ma_dropc4 command
// P = restrict admin from running ma_setadminflag command
// T = restrict admin from running ma_timebomb command

// Y = restrict admin from running ma_beacon command
// S = restrict admin from running ma_setcolour or ma_setcolor
// Z = restrict admin from running ma_give and ma_giveammo
//
// An example would be if you wanted to prevent admin
// with steam id STEAM_0:0:2388333
// from being able to play sounds and rcon command
//
// STEAM_0:0:2388333 rp // Admin can't rcon and play sound !!
//
// Another example
// STEAM_0:0:3389333 kmc // Admin can't kick, slay or change maps
//
//
// You can also use admin groups instead of flags, you setup admin groups
// in the admingroups.txt file then use them in this file.
// For example if you setup a group called "Clan Member" and "Kick Only" you would set it per
// player like this:-
//
// STEAM_0:0:1234234 Clan Member // Fred
// STEAM_0:0:234884 Kick Only // Jim
//
//
// If you wanted an admin to be created by IP Address you
// set your entry to be in the format
//
// ;IP Address flag
//
// Example
//
// ;213.133.76.58 rp // Admin can't rcon and play sound !!
// ;113.124.36.2 kmc // Admin can't kick, slay or change maps
//
// If you want to have an Admin created by both steam ID and IP address you
// use the format STEAM_ID;IP_ADDRESS flags
//
// Example
//
// STEAM_0:1:877489;231.192.67.5 rp // Admin can't rcon and play sound !!
//
// IMPORTANT NOTES !!!!
//
// If you only use an IP Address, the character ';' MUST be directly in
// front of it.
//
// There must be a space between the steam ID/IP Address and restriction flags
// or the plug-in will assume that it is part of the Steam ID/IP Address
//
// Another alternative to using a steam id is a name and password
//
// The format of this is ;;"name";password flags
//
// For example I would use
//
// ;;"Mani";maniadminplugin rp // Admin can't rcon or playsound
//
// In order to use the password, put
//
// setinfo _password mypassword
//
// in your config.cfg file in your client installation.
