Hey there guys,

Just went through the hell of trying to join this forum (how in the hell was I supposed to know what IRIS meant?) to ask how to start a hidden dedicated server on Windows Vista. I have the files but no idea of what to do with them. If you guys could link me to a video explaining how to set a server up or just explain it here I would be much obliged.

Thanks

Welcome to the forums... glad you finally made it. that question is there to keep the bots at bay.

how in the hell was I supposed to know what IRIS meant?

idk, maybe it's written on the main Hidden-Source (http://www.hidden-source.com) page... like right at the top or something approximating that?

setting up a server is pretty straight forward. you can follow ANY tutorial you can find for ANY source mod. then just alter the things that apply to the given mod.

and what do you mean by files? there are 2 sets. the dedicated server that comes with your steam client or the standalone server that downloads all the individual files separately.

yea, I kinda failed on the IRIS thing, but in my defense it was like 5 in the morning and I didn't feel like opening up a new window to figure it out.

As that I am not well versed with the ways of finding things on the internets could you, or someone else, please link me to a tutorial explaining how to set up dedicated servers for a source game/mod.

Thanks again for you help,

EDIT: And by files I mean the ones I downloaded from the site for a Hidden Dedicated Server. Also on a unrelated note, do I need to download the update?

the search function really isn't that difficult to use :/

you'll want to get the latest server file package AND the hot fix as that solves a few problems.

there is a hidden specific guide linked by blak above. for more general server assistance you can check http://www.srcds.com/ for more general guides... mostly for things like CS:S etc but 99% of the rules apply.

alright,

I did everything Paegus's tut told me to do and it created a server, but I can only view it as a LAN server. Is there anyway to allow other, non local players, to join my dedicated server? I've had a couple of my friends get on and try to join but they cannot join.

Thank you for your patience, I'm pretty new with all this stuff so if I'm completely missing the point on something just tell me.

I did everything Phaedrus' tut told me to do and it created a server

fixed.

I had the same problem, i'm fairly certain it's a problem with the ports being closed.

The port you need is 27105 (i think)

if you're still clueless try http://www.portforward.com for a router specific guide on opening ports.

If my name was abundant in NARWHAL than yes I was :)

I think I'm [NARWHAL] NARWHALRUS on Hidden

I think the port is 27015 but I'm not entirely sure either, I'll try opening it though.

I'll keep you guys updated

Thanks

EDIT: Last time I tried closing ports in disable the security on my network. . . thats not gonna happen right?

You want to open UDP ports 27015 and 27020. As well as TCP port 27015. NOT close them.

Are you running this off a cable modem or dsl connection?
